Several years ago, I started to develop pain in my joints. It wasn’t strong at first, but still alarming, as I had never had symptoms like this before. Something in my gut told me that there was an underlying issue going on with my health. Doing what most people would do, I went to my doctor and he said it sounded like rheumatoid arthritis. I couldn’t believe it because starting at a very young age, I had already had many digestive issues throughout my life, so I had my fair share of very debilitating symptoms.
I told him I was going to get to the bottom of it and I wouldn’t live with this diagnosis for the rest of my life. There had been many stressful events that led up to me getting sick that I know triggered these symptoms. I ended up going through a very intense program at a natural health clinic. I initially got much worse, to the point of barely being able to walk upstairs and in perpetual body pain. After a year of this program, I finally started to feel better and gradually my symptoms started to become less intense.
There was so much change and loss going on in my life before and during the time that I was sick. I wish I could say I knew how to handle it, but I didn’t. After losing my health, loved ones and any resemblance to how my life once was I was forced to adapt and grow. I gradually came to realize that everything that happens is for a much deeper purpose. I learned so much about myself during that time, not just about the power of food to heal but about the undeniable fact that stress can make you sick. I didn’t think I would survive that illness, but I did. I learned that you can never sacrifice your health for anything and that you must stay loyal and committed to yourself. This is not selfish either, it’s self- preservation.
What started out as a quest to regain my physical health became an emotional and spiritual cleanse and renewal. I learned throughout this journey and particularly from the health challenges I have faced is that if you have nourishing food, people, environments and thoughts, thriving is not only possible but probable. Each and every one of us can rise out of dark circumstances. I have enormous faith in the power of the body and mind to heal. Whether a person is facing chronic disease, weight issues, depression, anxiety or any other issue the first step is understanding that the most important relationship we have is the one with our self.
